Latisse is an eye medication used to enhance eyelash growth. Latisse may be prescribed for patients who have sparse or thin eyelashes, a condition called hypotrichosis, or for patients who have eyelash loss, a condition known as madarosis.
Latisse was originally used as an anti-glaucoma medication called Bimatoprost. Bimatoprost has been prescribed for glaucoma patients for over ten years and has been proven to be a safe drop with relatively few side effects. One side effect that patients noticed was that their eyelashes were becoming thicker, longer and darker. This finding triggered the research and development of Latisse as it is prescribed today.
When applied nightly to the eyelash margin, Latisse can increase eyelash length and thickness and darken the color of the eyelashes. Latisse lengthens eyelashes by allowing the hair to remain in the active growth phase for a longer period time. Latisse thickens each eyelash by causing the size of the hair bulb to be bigger. LATISSE darkens eyelashes by stimulating pigment formation.
Because LATISSE affects pigment formation, you may experience a darkening of the eyelids or skin around the eye or a darkening of the colored part of the eye, the iris. Eyelid swelling, eye redness, irritation and itching are also common side effects. Uneven eyelash growth may also occur.
If you have sparse or thin eyelashes or have experienced a loss of eyelashes, you may be a good candidate for Latisse. Some conditions that cause eyelash loss or thinning may need to be treated in a different way. If you are being treated for glaucoma, you may not be a Latisse candidate. It is important to get a comprehensive eye evaluation before initiating use with Latisse.
