In a recent FDA study, more than 95% of participants were satisfied with their vision following LASIK surgery.
What is Intra LASIK?
All Laser Intra LASIK is one of the safest and most precise techniques for Laser Vision Correction that is currently available. It reduces the risk of complications, enhances safety and improves accuracy, which offers the potential for greater visual results.
LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism, has advanced recently. LASIK is a two-step procedure: In the first step, a Corneal flap is made in the front part of the Cornea (the clear tissue in front of the Iris). The final step consists of using an Excimer Laser to sculpt the middle layer of the cornea.
In the past, the LASIK flap was created with a device called a Microkeratome, which used a metallic blade. While millions of patients had successful surgeries with the Microkeratome, the margin of error resulted in some cases of imperfect flaps and thus it has been replaced by more advanced technology.
Our practice only offers the latest “All Laser” Intra-LASIK procedure. This is a two-step procedure: A special Intralase laser is used to create a flap on the outer layer of the cornea. The Intralase laser has the advantage of being computer controlled and allows for more adjustments to be made than was possible with a Microkeratome. A second laser, an Excimer laser, is then used to sculpt the middle layer of the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism.
How Does the Intralase Laser Work?
The IntraLase femtosecond laser emits a “cool to the touch” laser beam that passes harmlessly through the cornea and is focused on a pre-determined depth. The Laser beam produces a thin layer of bubbles, which gently lift and separate corneal layers to create a flap. This flap is then lifted gently to allow treatment with an Excimer laser, which sculpts the cornea. Once this is complete, the flap is placed back on the cornea. The Intralase has the advantage of creating a flap with a beveled edge that seals and is secure without the need for stitches.
Is the Procedure Painful?
Most patients choose to have surgery on both eyes at the same time. The procedure takes about 10 minutes for both eyes. Special eye drops are used to numb the eye. Most patients only describe a pressure sensation during the procedure.
